Learn about wet-plate collodion photography in the beautiful setting of coastal Maine! Whether you've had some experience with wet-plate photography, or none at all, you're welcome to join me in a one-on-one tutorial where you can learn at your own pace and tailor the experience to your own requirements. The descriptions below offer an outline of the basics, but these can easily be modified to suit your own needs.

My broad ranging interest in art, science, and education, allows me to offer insights into the processes that you may not find elsewhere. If you're interested in understanding the "why" behind how things work, in clear practical terms, this might be the tutorial for you.

Introductory Tutorial:
Learn the hands-on basics of wet-plate collodion photography in this two day tutorial. You will be introduced to the basic techniques required to coat and sensitize glass plates. All work will be done in the studio and darkroom, all materials and equipment are supplied.
Day 1 covers:
Overview of necessary equipment and it's use
Proper handling of chemistry
Safety precautions
Background info on general purpose collodion formulas
Preparing and caring for your silver nitrate bath
Preparing developers
Glass preparation Pouring techniques for collodion
Pouring techniques for developer
Day 2 covers:
Troubleshooting basics
Varnish preparation
Varnishing and drying plates
Practice! Practice! Practice!

Intermediate Tutorial:
This 2 day tutorial will extend the basic techniques learned in the introductory tutorial. It will assume some familiarity with coating and developing plates. Learn about the equipment and techniques for taking your darkroom with you and shooting in the field.
Day 1 covers:
Discussion with demonstrations regarding exposure and image formed
Discussion with demonstrations of developers and development
Discussion of trouble shooting techniques
Review of field equipment & portable darkrooms
Day 2 covers:
Field work
Transporting and setting up equipment
Practice! Practice! Practice!

Advanced Tutorial:
This 2 day tutorial extends on the material covered in the intermediate tutorial. It's structure is free-form and is tailored to the individual's needs.
Day 1 and Day 2 Material covered includes (but is not limited to):

Spectral sensitivity and exposure
Trouble shooting techniques
Increasing image density
Trouble shooting techniques
Field shooting
